I’m Thinking of Ending Things:
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Director: Charlie Kaufman
Runtime: 2h 14m
Cast: Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette
This movie, based on the same-named book by Iain Reid, is one of the most creative ones written by the guy who won an Oscar for writing Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Jessie Buckley is fantastic as the young lady who travels to meet the parents of her lousy boyfriend. However, maybe she doesn’t. The more the film’s storyline falls apart, the more it becomes a reflection of stereotypes in filmmaking and the power of a tale.
The Lost Daughter:
Genre: Drama
Director: Maggie Gyllenhaal
Runtime: 2h 1m
Cast: Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Jonson
Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley, two of the actors in this movie based on Elena Ferrante’s book of the same name, were nominated for Academy Awards for their roles. Colman gives one of the best performances of her career as a woman on vacation in Greece who is taken in by a big family. The fact that the young mother reminds her of herself brings back memories of a time when she, too, may have had mixed feelings about being a mother. This is the type of mature drama for which audiences have been clamoring for years, but which seldom appears on the big screen.
Day Shift:
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Horror
Director: J.J. Perry

Netflix’s horror comedy Day Shift follows Bud Jablonski, who isn’t thrilled about being assigned to the day shift despite the fact that it’s the safest time to hunt vampires. Bud has to go back to the Vampire Hunter’s Guild because his ex-wife Jocelyn wants to take their daughter Paige to Florida. Even though Seth has been tasked by the guild to keep an eye on Bud for any rule infractions, he has become sympathetic to Bud’s plight. While this is going on, a vampire by the name of Audrey San Fernando is on the hunt for both of them as part of her overall strategy to conquer the human race.
Persuasion:
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Horror
Director: J.J. Perry
Runtime: 1h 13m
Cast: Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco, Natasha Liu Bordizzo
Critics don’t like how director Carrie Cracknell updated the story of “Persuasion.” They don’t like how the main character, Anne Elliot, breaks the fourth wall and talks to the audience at different points. If you can get past that, though, this is a fun take on Austen’s last book. At a young age, Anne was temporarily betrothed to Frederick Wentworth. Anne eventually broke up with him after her family told her that he wouldn’t make a good husband because he was from a poor family. Anne’s family finances have declined over the years, while Frederick has become a wealthy captain with emotions for Anne. But the handsome William Elliot may be his rival for Anne’s affections.
The Gray Man:
Genre: Action, Thriller

Runtime: 1h 28m

The Russo brothers and the writers of the last two Avengers movies are back in The Gray Man, which is said to be the most expensive movie that Netflix has ever put out. The film stars Ryan Gosling as the eponymous Gray Man, also known as Sierra Six. While on a job for the CIA, Six gets hold of sensitive information that could bring the agency down. Due to Six’s refusal to give up the information, the CIA brings back Lloyd Hansen, a psychopath who has vowed to eliminate Six no matter the cost. Dani Miranda, a CIA operative, is on Six’s side, but they have a mountain to climb as Lloyd creeps in.
The Sea Beast:
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family, Fantasy
Director: Chris Williams
Runtime: 1h 55m
Cast: Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris
The Sea Beast is Netflix’s most extravagant and aesthetically pleasing animated feature to date, and one would imagine that the Mouse House would be thrilled to add it to its collection. In a world where monsters rule the seas, Captain Jacob Holland and his crew are well-known for their sea monster-hunting abilities. Because of this, a little girl called Maisie Brumble, who has never known her parents, becomes obsessed with Jacob and tries to hide away aboard his ship to join his crew. Despite Jacob’s dedication to tracking down the legendary Red Bluster, he can’t help but warm up to Maisie thanks to her boundless excitement and wealth of information.
Tick, Tick… BOOM!:
Genre: Drama
Director: Lin-Manuel Miranda
Runtime: 2h
Cast: Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús
Tick, Tick… Boom! is a musical directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield as Jon, a theatrical composer on the verge of what may be his big break, and is available on Netflix. The play it is based on was written by Jonathan Larson and is based on his own life. The pressures of family, friends and the frantic NYC zeitgeist of the early 1990s all converge on Jon in the days leading up to the performance of the musical that might finally put him on the map but could also be the downfall of his hopes for creative achievement. Tick, Tick, Boom! is a panorama of show-stopping emotions that you just cannot miss. It is both a grand tribute to Larson’s source material and a wonderful musical drama in its own right.
