Once again, Radio Silence is directing the film. Production will begin this summer with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick writing the script.
“We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy, and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family,” said Spyglass and Paramount together in a joint statement.
Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak will produce. Kevin Williamson, who created the franchise 25 years ago with his genre-skewering script, will executive produce and Radio Silence member Chad Villella and Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre.
“Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage, Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life,” Radio Silence said.
The Scream franchise was relaunched in January when the latest movie opened. It has earned $62.6 million domestically to date and a combined global haul of $106.7 million, with strong showings amid challenges posed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic crisis from 2015, which killed director Wes Craven (who died during filming). The new installment saw an appearance of Michael Meyers, who wore a Ghostface mask for his murderous debut as he stalked friends young and old in Woodsboro again this time around after taking on some newbies like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette once more! Onward!
The latest installment of Scream, the movie about horror tropes and reboots, focused on topics such as “elevated horror” and legacy sequels. In a statement announcing the return of their screenwriters, Vanderbilt and Busick said, “We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in this sandbox.” It was an honor for them to collaborate with Kevin Williamson, who created his franchise after all these years.
Added Project X Entertainment partners: We have become a big family, and we are eager to continue telling stories in the wonderful Scream universe.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, executive producer Villella mentioned that it would be tough to make a sixth Scream. But, he said: “For us to get back into the minds of our audience, we need to break some rules. We have created and broken so many already in this series – let’s just go ahead and do it now.”
