SPOILER ALERT: The following story contains details of the Season 2 finale of iCarly.
There is good news for all of the #Creddie fans out there as Paramount+ has renewed the popular remake iCarly for a third season on the streaming service. It seemed inevitable that the show would return to explore the two’s uneasy relationship and where it may go next in the wake of the Season 2 cliffhanger that left the fate of the pair in doubt, as well as the show’s sustained appeal with a younger audience. A fresh teaser, featuring Josh Peck of Drake and Josh fame hyping up the renewal news, was released by the streamer to close out the announcement. A release date for Season 3 has been tentatively established for 2023 and production will now start later this year.
Beginning in 2021, the popular Nickelodeon show iCarly continued on the streamer. It has the same plot as the original series, but with an older cast that has regrouped to recreate the web series that got it all started. The group manages both common issues and bizarre circumstances that come with being well-known online. The main focus of the show is on its titular character Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove), who is now the only host of her web show after parting ways with her co-host Sam (Jeanette McCurdy). In addition, the show’s producer Nathan Kress, who is Carly’s tech-savvy buddy and prospective love interest, has returned. The conclusion of Season 2 saw Freddie’s fiancée accuse him of having feelings for Carly, setting up a potential future romance between the two.
In the words of Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of streaming at Paramount+, “iCarly’s loyal fan base grew up with Carly, Spencer, and Freddie, and have now fallen in love with Harper and Millicent, too. We’re thrilled to have Miranda, Jerry, Nathan, Laci, and Jaidyn return for a third season and we know Paramount+’s growing YA audience is as well. And I, for one, must find out what happens with #Creddie!”
The show quickly established itself as a model for how to properly carry out a relaunch since it kept the same tone while adapting its humor and plot to fit a very different internet environment. In addition to the existing ensemble, which included Jerry Trainor returning as Spencer, Carly’s brother, the series welcomed newcomers, Laci Mosley and Jaidyn Triplett.
The show was created by showrunner Ali Schouten-Seeks (Young & Hungry, Diary of a Future President), who also served as executive producer, for Paramount+. Alissa Vradenburg, Trainor, and Kress are the series’ individual producers. Dan Schneider was the mind behind the first iteration of iCarly on Nickelodeon.
The third season of iCarly will air in 2023. The first two seasons are presently available to stream in their entirety on Paramount+.
