With humor and charm, Look Both Ways examines how one choice may alter the course of one’s life forever. On the night of her college graduation, Natalie (Lili Reinhart) suffers a pregnancy scare after she and a friend, Gabe (Danny Ramirez), have a one-night stand. There are two possible outcomes shown in the film: one in which the test comes back positive, and another in which it does not. The stories in Look Both Ways are equally captivating, and it’s nice to have an alternate emphasis on Natalie’s professional life rather than just the romance.

Grant (Loki) and Henry Golding (the hunk from Crazy Rich Asians). In Persuasion, directed by Carrie Cracknell, there is a realistic story that is meant to pull at your heartstrings and warm your spirit. The beautiful costumes and breathtaking landscapes and vistas make the movie a visual feast.
Love & Gelato
Year: 2022
Director: Brandon Camp
Cast: Susanna Skaggs, Tobia De Angelis, Owen McDonnell
Runtime: 150 minutes
IMDB: 5.1/10
Synopsis:
Love & Gelato is a charming romantic comedy based on Jenna Evans Welch’s best-selling book. It will appeal to fans of Emily in Paris as well as those looking for a light movie. Lina (Susanna Skaggs) goes to Rome for the summer before she starts college, and the movie shows what she does there. The film uses a lot of the standard plot devices for romantic comedies, especially love triangles, which audiences seem to really like. Insta-love! The definition of a true friend: is someone who is always there for you, no matter what. The stunning Italian scenery captured on film is an added bonus.
A Whisker Away
Year: 2020
Director: Junichi Sato and Tomotaka Shibayama
Cast: Mirai Shida, Natsuki Hanae, Hiroaki Ogi
Runtime: 144 minutes
IMDB: 6.7/10
Synopsis:
When first heard, the concept of “A Whisker Away” appears absurd. Middle schooler Miyo Sasaki has feelings for her best friend, Kento Hinode. She wears a mystery mask to make herself seem like a cat and approach him more easily. Exactly! Totally absurd, right? The underlying message of this upcoming anime film is that first impressions aren’t always what they seem to be. The movie’s premise is best described by its Japanese title, which translates to “Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat.”
A Whisker Away is a charming tale that is as much about loving others as it is about loving oneself, once you get past the novel’s jarring beginning. Miyo may seem joyful on the outside, but she is really a lonely girl looking for somewhere to call home. She is trying to find something, and all the cat-related stuff is just a cute, useful, and aesthetically pleasing way for her to do that. A Whisker Away is a must-see for anyone who likes romantic comedies. It has beautiful animation, well-developed characters, and a touching story.
Holidate
Year: 2020
Director: John Whitesell
Cast: Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey, Kristin Chenoweth, Frances Fisher
Runtime: 144 minutes
IMDB: 6.1/10
Synopsis:
Holidate, which stars Emma Roberts from American Horror Story and Luke Bracey from Elvis: The Movie, is a sweet romantic comedy that makes fun of the difficulties of being single in today’s society. Through a series of increasingly charming meetings, the two single main characters in Holidate find that they have a surprising connection and real chemistry. This builds on the famous, and sometimes cringe-worthy, holiday movie tropes. Holidate is full of funny and endearing clichés, and it also has a great cast, which includes Kristin Chenoweth (Schmigadoon!). Holidate, at its heart, is a romantic comedy, and it strikes a wonderful balance between funny and touching moments.

The In-Between:
Year: 2022
Director: Arie Posin
Cast: Joey King, Kyle Allen, Kim Dickens
Runtime: 155 minutes
IMDB: 5.9/10
Synopsis:
In “The In Between,” a romantic drama about two high school students whose love affair is cruelly cut short, Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze make a cameo. This time around, the tragically doomed couple are high school students: Tessa (Joey King) and Skylar, who meet in the opening car crash. As an extreme example of the film’s lack of subtlety, Skyler dies and Tessa is hospitalized with heart damage.
The narrative of “The In-Between” is structured in two parts: the past, in which Tessa and Skylar’s romance unfolds, and the present, in which a heartbroken Tessa begins to think that her deceased partner is attempting to reach out to her from beyond the grave.

Really Love
Year: 2020
Director: Angel Kristi Williams
Cast: Kofi Siriboe, Yootha Wong-loi Sing, and Uzo Aduba
Runtime: 135 minutes
IMDB: 6.1/10
Synopsis:
A young black artist faces problems as he makes his way through the art world, and he meets a driven law student by accident.
The artists of “Really Love” take their craft very seriously. The movie functions as an exhibition of black artists. The portrait of Helena in blue by Ronald Jackson is where the two individuals first saw each other. The soundtrack is as nuanced and under control as the paintings that Isaiah creates on his path to a one-man exhibition. It floats on a bed of jazzy brass and throws in unexpected Go-Go grooves, courtesy of the musician Goldlink. Gerard Lovell does a fantastic job at creating the alluring paintings that Isaiah has shown. Respect for the creative process and an understanding of art’s importance are very important in this community. The film looks like Williams and cinematographer Shawn Peters took an artistic approach to make it.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Year: 2018
Director: Susan Johnson
Cast: Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Janel Parrish
Runtime: 100 minutes
IMDB: 7.1/10
Storyline:
If you’re searching for a lighthearted, romantic movie to brighten your day, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a must-watch on Netflix. The plot follows Lara Jean (Lana Condor), a girl whose greatest dreams come true when five letters she penned to her hidden crushes are sent out without her knowledge. When she is approached by her former crush Peter (Noah Centineo), she is scared that it will interfere with her current infatuation with Josh (Israel Broussard), so Lara Jean and Peter decide to fake a relationship so that they may be with who they want to be with. So naturally, pretending to together lead to the development of genuine sentiments between the two. From start to end, the video is a delight, allowing you to experience a period when who “loved” you was the most important thing in the world, but without any of the agonies that high school implies. Although the sequels aren’t as good as the first, the full To All the Boys trilogy is now accessible on Netflix.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
Year: 2020
Director: David Dobkin
Cast: Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Pierce Brosnan, Dan Stevens, and Demi Lovato
Runtime: 2h3m
IMDB: 6.5/10
Storyline:
However, I had no idea that Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga would turn out to be one of the year’s most heartfelt and romantic films. As a couple of Icelandic singers with aspirations of winning the Eurovision Song Contest, the Mean Girls and Game Night actress demonstrates once again why she’s one of the most undervalued comic performers of her time. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s the original music and the sensitivity in between the laughter that makes this a must-see for everyone who enjoys a good laugh. However, due to the love tale, it’s not only because of that alone. In addition, Dan Stevens gives the best comedy performance of his career, which is also unexpectedly heartfelt.
About Time
Year: 2013
Director: Richard Curtis
Cast: Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Lindsay Duncan, Tom Hollander, and Margot Robbie
Runtime: 2h2m
IMDB: 7.8/10
Storyline:
In addition to being an excellent romantic comedy, About Time (2013) is one of the finest time travel films ever filmed. And, of course, it’s a wonderful movie. Director Richard Curtis is inspired when Domhnall Gleeson plays a young man learning from his father (Bill Nighy) that their family can travel across time. For example, he can travel back in time to the night they first met to start their relationship properly after he loses his opportunity with a charming American lady (Rachel McAdams). Initially, About Time seems to be a lighthearted, grounded, and romantic adventure. However, as the film progresses, it gradually shows itself to be a heartbreaking father-son narrative at its core.
Loving
Year: 2016
Director: Jeff Nichols
Cast: Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton, Marton Csokas
Runtime: 1h23m
IMDB 7.0/10
Storyline:
Whether or not you like Jeff Nichols’ Loving depends partly on your taste in courtroom dramas. For those who enjoy courtroom dramas that are all about pot-boiling slickness, Loving will be less appealing than Nichols’ films about momentous legal procedures. That year’s landmark civil rights triumph against America’s anti-miscegenation laws was won in part by the married couple at its center: Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Jeter Loving (Ruth Negga). When it comes to legal terminology, the movie doesn’t use any and takes place nearly exclusively outside of the courtroom. You’ll like Loving if you’re fed up with courtroom dramas that rely on pantomime and if you believe those types of storylines deserve more discipline.
Silver Linings Playbook
Year: 2012
Director: David O. Russell
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro
Runtime: 1h22m
IMDB: 7.7/10
Storyline:
David O. Russell’s masterwork, set in Philadelphia, is about two hot wrecks who fall for one other as they recover from tremendous trauma. It’s an incredible combination of enormous laughter, heartbreaking reality, and a poignant love story. Thematically, Silver Linings Playbook walks a dangerous tightrope and never falls off, much to the surprise and pleasure of anybody who sees the movie. This was the first film to be nominated for an Oscar in all four acting categories since Warren Beatty’s Reds 31 years before (for stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Jacki Weaver). Lawrence, of course, won Best Actress, and the rest is history.
Family is a strange thing. We adore them, yet they can drive us insane at times. Few films have conveyed the catastrophic sadness and sometimes humor that occurs when loved ones throw down, like Silver Linings Playbook. There’s a powerful message here about grace, making apologies, and the healing power of unselfish love.
Set It Up
Year: 2018
Director: Claire Scanlon
Cast: Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu, and Taye Diggs
Runtime: 1h45m
IMDB: 6.5/10
Storyline:
If you’re seeking a lovely romantic comedy but don’t want to watch anything from a prior decade for the umpteenth time, Claire Scanlon’s entertaining Set It Up is a must-see. The narrative revolves around two overworked assistants (Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell) who plan to set up their bosses (Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, respectively) to acquire some much-needed free time away from their stressful jobs. Despite their schemes, they begin to fall for one another. The rom-com rhythms are obvious, but they’re executed so skillfully and successfully that you won’t mind. Furthermore, the picture sizzles because of the brilliant performances of Deutch and Powell, who should be the streaming generation’s Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.
Let It, Snow
Year: 2019
Director: Luke Snellin
Cast: Isabela Merced, Shameik Moore, Liv Hewson, Odeya Rush, Jacob Batalon, Kiernan Shipka, Joan Cusack
Runtime:1h32m
IMDB: 5.8/10
Storyline:
If you’re looking for some seasonal romance, Netflix’s Let It Snow, a breezy holiday rom-com that discovers a succession of overlapping love tales on one unfortunate Christmas-season snow day, is a bit of a Love Actually for the adolescent set. It’s a beautiful picture from start to finish, as interested in the tragedies of adolescent friendship and household issues as it is in the developing romances, and it’s loaded with wonderful performances from a stellar ensemble of young actors. A lot of the Netflix Christmas romances are in the Hallmark channel style, which is fine if that’s your thing, but for those looking for an old-fashioned feel-good holiday romance, Let It Snow is the ticket.
Someone Great
Year: 2019
Director: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Cast: Gina Rodriguez, LaKeith Stanfield, Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise
Runtime: 1h32m
IMDB: 6.2/10
Storyline:
Someone Great, a Netflix comedy focusing on a young lady (Gina Rodriguez) who goes out for one more wild night with her closest friends before leaving town, is pitched somewhere between a love tale and a night-out comedy. Oh, and her seven-year boyfriend recently dumped her. The lover in question is portrayed by LaKeith Stanfield in peak charming mode, and their chemistry is a stunner, keeping you engrossed in their love even though you know it’s gone. There’s plenty of humor in this one, but the relationship between Rodriguez and Stanfield gives the picture heart and flare.
The Incredible Jessica James
Year: 2017
Director: Jim Strouse
Cast: Jessica Williams, Chris O’Dowd, Lakeith Stanfield, Noel Wells
Runtime: 1h25m
IMDB: 6.5/10
Storyline:
Jessica Williams has yet to get the recognition she deserves after her time on The Daily Show, but the indie rom-com The Incredibles 2 has changed everything. Jessica James is the first time we’ve seen her in a prominent role since then, and she just lights up the screen. Now, Jessica James’ character isn’t nearly as amazing as the title suggests — she’s very selfish and naïve — but she’s passionate, raw, and ambitious, and Williams makes you adore her despite her flaws. A cameo by the ever-charming Chris O’Dowd doesn’t hurt, and the two have explosive chemistry as they attempt to navigate the rivers of sorrow together toward something healthy and fresh. The Incredible Jessica James is a novel take on the rom-com that doesn’t kowtow to the lowest common denominator. It’s sexy, humorous, and certainly current
Always Be My Maybe
Year: 2019
Director: Nahnacthka Kahn
Cast: Ali Wong, Randall Park, Michelle Buteau, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Dae Kim, James Saito, Vivian Bang
Runtime: 1h41m
IMDB: 6.8/10
Storyline:
With 2018’s Set It Up, Netflix reintroduced the rom-com, and the streaming service’s 2019 offering, Always Be My Maybe, is equally bright and enjoyable. The film, co-written and starring Randall Park and Ali Wong, portrays a pair of young best friends who have since drifted away and are pulled together again in adulthood, despite their lives having taken quite different roads. Park and Wong are fantastic together, and the film allows us some breathing room with some well-paced emotional passages. It’s also not short on scene-stealers, with Michelle Buteau being a hoot and Keanu Reeves proving his genius knows no boundaries once again.
The Half of It
Year: 2020
Director: Alice Wu
Cast: Leah Lewis, Enrique Murciano, Alexxis Lemire, Becky Ann Baker, Daniel Diemer, Collin Chou
Runtime: 1h44m
IMDB: 6.9/10
Storyline:
In recent years, Netflix has been the home of some home-run romantic comedies, and the most recent gem, The Half of It, may have just threatened to dethrone To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The film, written and produced by Alice Wu, is a reworking on the original Cyrano de Bergerac – but not in the uncomfortable catfishing manner that Sierra Burgess Is a Loser was. Wu’s moving, beautifully photographed story follows three teens as they seek for their identities and their first love, all tangled up in a chaotic, hungry love triangle that never seems cheap or exploitative. The Half of It is a striking self-aware adolescent romance that’s as heartbreaking as the real thing, beautifully filmed, brilliantly timed, and packed with characters you can’t help but come to adore.
Stardust
Year: 2007
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Cast: Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, Michelle Pfieffer, Sienna Miller, Robert De Niro, Ian McKellan, Ben Barnes, Henry Cavill, Peter O’Toole, Rupert Everett, Mark Strong, Ricky Gervais
Runtime: 2h7m
IMDB: 7.6/10
Storyline:
Stardust is a colorful, wonderful trip through a mythical realm where stars fall to earth in human form, space pirates sail the air, and the ghosts of royalty are delighted by fratricide. It is based on Neil Gaiman’s novella of the same name. Charlie Cox enchanted audiences long before he became Daredevil as Tristan Thorn, a young man who travels to a mythical world to catch a fallen star (Claire Danes) and discovers adventure and romance beyond the wall he was instructed to never pass. Michelle Pfieffer’s bright portrayal as a ferocious witch on the quest for immortality makes Stardust a humorous and enjoyable film. Overall, Stardust offers everything a fantasy adventurer might desire, from wild imagination to sweeping romance to Robert De Niro as a space pirate.
Marriage Story
Year: 2019
Director: Noah Baumbach
Cast: Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta
Runtime: 2h17m
IMDB: 7.9/10
Storyline:
Warning: Marriage Story will ruin you. But it’s not only one of the finest films of 2019, it’s Noah Baumbach’s best picture ever. The plot follows the divorce procedure from separation through finalization, with Adam Driver as the successful theatre director’s husband and Scarlett Johansson portraying the successful actress’s wife. The fact that the couple has a kid complicates things, but the beauty of Baumbach’s picture is that it portrays the narrative from both points of view, so no matter which side you end up on, you have tremendous empathy for both persons. Driver and Johansson provide career-best performances as Baumbach creates full-bodied, multifaceted characters—you know, like real people. In terms of the subject matter, Baumbach eloquently depicts how the two persons’ voices—and the love they previously shared—get lost in the process of divorce. Marriage Story is a must-see film that is both heartbreaking and incredibly real.
The Lucky One
Year: 2012
Director: Scott Hicks
Cast: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Jay R. Ferguson, Blythe Danner
Runtime: 1h41m
IMDB: 6.5/10
Storyline:
The Fortunate One, based on Nicholas Sparks’ book, follows the tale of Logan Thibault (Zac Efron), who becomes the lucky survivor of a disastrous operation in Iraq. Logan discovers a photograph of Beth Green (Taylor Schilling) that one of his now-lost soldiers has left behind. Logan returns from the war and goes in search of Beth, only to discover more than he bargained for. If you like army romances, this is a love story for you. This drama transforms a good luck charm into real love, with darker passages including Logan’s fight with PTSD.
Dear John
Year: 2010
Director: Lasse Hallström
Cast: Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Henry Thomas, Scott Porter, Richard Jenkins
Runtime: 1h48m
IMDB: 6.3/10
Storyline:
Dear John, a military romance based on a Nicholas Sparks book, is primarily a long-distance love letter romance. While on vacation in Charleston, US Army Special Forces Staff Sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) falls in love with Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried). However, John returns to Afghanistan after two weeks, continuing their relationship by love letter. Savannah starts to wonder whether what she feels for John is genuinely love, or if she is developing affections for someone else as time passes. As is typical of Nicholas Sparks’ masterpieces, a love triangle develops. While it may not be as well-known as The Notebook or A Walk to Remember, if you’re searching for a romance filled with languishing, longing, and unrequited love, this is the film for you.
