With the first film debuting in 2008 and the last picture in the Twilight Saga landing in 2012, it has been a full decade since the last Twilight film was shown in cinemas. This young adult paranormal romance blockbuster, based on Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling novel series, skyrocketed the careers of its actors, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
Meyer’s perspective on vampires was a refreshing change from the norm, and the five-film series successfully brought her universe to the big screen. There is a little catch, however, when it comes to seeing the movies in order: although there are only four books in the book series, there are five films in all. Breaking Dawn, the last novel in the series, is so dense that it requires splitting into two films, a strategy that has been subsequently used by other franchises like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.
Whether you are experiencing Bella and Edward’s story for the first time or you want to relive the magic, you will not be disappointed.
The Twilight saga is well-known for its devoted fan base. Millions of people all around the globe have seen the films, and many of them desire to see them in chronological sequence. But how do you even begin? And what Twilight movies in order should you be watching, ideally? To find out all you need to know, read on!

Twilight Movies in Chronological Order
Twilight (2008)
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Writers: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephenie Meyer
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke
The title of the first film in the Twilight series is self-explanatory. Bella, now 17 years old, relocates to Forks, Washington with her father and Charlie, the town’s police chief. When she arrives at her new school, she finds herself drawn to Edward right away. She is both intrigued and annoyed by his hot-and-cold demeanour as she attempts to decipher his true feelings for her. Quickly, he exposes himself to be a vampire, but not a youngster like her; he’s well over a century old. Because Edward and the other vampires find the scent of Bella’s blood enticing, this naturally leads to tensions.
Despite all the problems, the two fall in love, and Edward introduces Bella to the magical world and the Cullen family.
The first film was a huge success, with a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 5.3 rating on IMBD, and nearly $405 million at the box office.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Director: Chris Weitz
Writers: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephenie Meyer
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
New Moon is the sequel to the first series. Even though Twilight ended on a happy note, we are thrust back into the plot not long after the original film’s ending and things take a tragic turn. When Bella receives a paper cut during her birthday celebration, Jasper loses it and attempts to drain her blood. The Cullens prevent Jasper from harming Bella, but Edward breaks up their relationship and leaves town to protect Bella from the Cullens, who find her blood irresistible. She is devastated and has a hard time moving past her grief, so she turns to risky, adrenaline-seeking activities.
At this juncture, she meets Jacob Black, who becomes a good companion and a co-conspirator in her adventurous endeavours. Despite her continued longing for Edward, Bella finds newfound happiness in her growing connection with Jacob. Jacob’s abrupt illness and subsequent return as a changed man complicates everything.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
Director: David Slade
Writers: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephenie Meyer
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
In response to the royal family’s demand that she be transformed because of her knowledge of the vampire world, Bella and Edward battle to maintain their connection in the following Twilight book, Eclipse. If Bella were to only marry Edward, he would turn her. Bella is worried about the consequences of being married so young. However, before they can settle their differences, Victoria comes with a horde of newborn vampires to exact her revenge on Bella and the Cullens for the death of her boyfriend, James, in the first film.
While Victoria’s army is being fought off by the combined forces of the Cullens and the Quileute tribe, Edward, Bella, and Jacob set up camp safely away from the fighting. Jacob’s lethal wrath is stoked when he overhears Edward and Bella discussing their impending engagement, but Bella’s kiss stops him in his tracks, and in that moment, she understands she loves Jacob just as much as she loves Edward. Her feelings for Edward are stronger. After Victoria’s loss, Jacob promises to remain out of Edward and Bella’s way, and the couple moves on to the next fight, where they inform Charlie of their engagement.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
Director: Bill Condon
Writers: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephenie Meyer
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
Breaking Dawn, the fourth novel in the series, is being adapted into two films, the first of which is included in this fourth volume.
In the first chapter of Breaking Dawn, which is set a few months after the end of Twilight, Bella and Edward are getting married. Jacob’s attendance at the wedding comes as a pleasant surprise to Bella until he learns that she and Edward are going to consummate their marriage on the honeymoon, before Bella’s metamorphosis, a move that might be fatal.
However, Bella does get pregnant with Edward’s vampire-hybrid kid, whom they name Renesmee, who develops at an astonishing pace, severely compromising Bella’s health. Upon learning that Bella is expecting, the werewolves are pulled apart over how to effectively destroy the threat they see the child to be.
Ultimately, Bella’s near death during delivery compels Edward to turn her into a vampire. Jacob comes into a murder of the baby, but as soon as he looks into her eyes, he “imprints” on her, a term used to describe what occurs when a Quileute shape-shifter meets their soul mate. Because she would one day give birth to his future lover, Bella had a special allure for Jacob.
Now that Renesmee has been imprinted on by a Quileute, she is secure, at least from werewolves. But don’t expect the Volturi to sit this one out; they make a brief appearance as the credits roll in Breaking Dawn, Part 1 to hint at their epic comeback at the film’s conclusion.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2
Director: Bill Condon
Writers: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephenie Meyer
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
After giving birth, Bella is transformed into a vampire by Edward so that she won’t die. This happens at the beginning of the film. She adapts to the shift very well, perhaps better than anybody else. Bella is initially angry when she finds that Jacob is destined to be her newborn daughter’s mate, but as Charlie begins demanding explanations, Jacob reveals his wolf transformation to help him accept the impossible and love Bella’s new condition.
The Volturi eventually find Bella and Edward’s daughter Renesme because of her rapid development. The locals think she’s an “immortal child,” a kid who was converted into a vampire and then trapped in time.
The Volturi want her destruction, since having an immortal child is very forbidden. Edward and Bella enlist the aid of others to show the Volturi that their daughter is a human-vampire hybrid distinct from the Immortal Children, not what she is thought to be.
Alice finally succeeds in convincing the Volturi to leave them alone by presenting them with a vision of a bloody battle that results in the deaths of Carlisle, Jasper, and several high-ranking Volturi coven members, and by introducing their final witness, another vampire-human hybrid named Nahuel, who demonstrates that Renesmee can grow up in peace.
The fifth and final film closes with Bella and Edward making the last declaration of their love for one another and committing to a life together indefinitely, thanks to Alice’s visions of a bright future.
