Disney+ just revealed the release date of their upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series. McGregor will return to the role of Obi-Wan on May 25th, 2022. The show coincides with Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith ten years after Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) falls to darkness and is defeated by his closest friend and Jedi apprentice, Kenobi (McGregor).
In the report that was released last year, Deborah Chow described The Mandalorian as “quite a dark time with him. Just being a Jedi isn’t safe. There are Jedi hunters out there.” This comment has sparked some speculation that one of the cast members is playing a character who will be tracking down and potentially killing or capturing any surviving Jedis in this series? Despite all these possible threats to his safety, McGregor remarked in that featurette: “Kenobi’s task is simple – he just wants to keep Luke safe.”.
In an interview with Forbes, McGregor teased that he and Christensen got to do “scenes together again as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.” Which has led many people to wonder if they will feature flashbacks in the movie.
Besides McGregor and Christensen, Obi-Wan Kenobi is also set to introduce a new slate of characters. A few are from the Star Wars franchise, but nothing is confirmed yet. The cast list includes Moses Ingram (who played Owen in Episode III), Kumail Nanjiani (who portrayed Maz Kanata in Rogue One), Indira Varma (playing Asajj Ventress’ daughter Satine Kryze) Rupert Friend as an unnamed character who has been rumored to play Han Solo’s father, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang playing Temmin “Snap” Wexley a young X-wing fighter pilot with very special skills which he learned while training alongside Poe Dameron; perhaps even Simone Kessell or Benny Safdie will be joining the show!
Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, and Ewan McGregor are the executive producers of the limited series.
